How does Phlas work?
Cold plasma is neither a cream nor a laser - but an activated state of air.
Cold plasma has been extensively researched over 20+ years and is commonly used in medical applications. Phlas makes the underlying technology usable for cosmetic at-home skincare – compact, controlled and in just 60 seconds per area.
Phlas generates cold plasma
The device uses electrical energy to directly activate ambient air. This produces cold plasma with reactive oxygen and nitrogen species.
The plasma is delivered to the skin in a controlled manner
The spacer creates a defined space between the plasma source and the skin and keeps the reactive plasma species where they are needed – on the skin surface.

Phlas’s roots trace back to one of the earliest research programs aboard the International Space Station. Starting in 2001, Prof. Dr. Gregor Morfill from the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics led experiments on "complex plasmas" in microgravity – work that spanned over two decades and resulted in over 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications.
This led to a practical discovery: cold plasma offers numerous applications on Earth. In 2011, Morfill and his daughter, biophysicist PD Dr. Julia Zimmermann, founded terraplasma GmbH as a spin-off from the Max Planck Society to translate this research into practical applications and develop solutions in the areas of wound healing, dermatology, disinfection, and sterilization.
